Supported Windows Operating Systems

The Global Conflict applet will run on Windows XP, 2000, ME, 98 or NT.

Global Conflict will run on Windows 95 if Winsock version 2.0 is installed.

A pentium computer with at least 48 megabytes of RAM is recommended.

Supported Linux Operating Systems

Global Conflict will run on Linux if the kernel is version 2.2.12 or higher, and if it has glibc version 2.1.2-11 or higher.

An Intel Pentium computer with at least 48 megabytes of RAM is required.

Prior to running the Global Conflict applet, version 1.4.1 of the Java 2 Runtime Environment must be installed. It can be downloaded from Sun. Netscape Navigator version 6.0 or higher must also be installed.

Make a symbolic link from the "netscape/plugins" directory to the "libjavaplugin_oji.so" library. For example:

cd /opt/netscape/plugins
ln -s /usr/java/j2re1.4.1_02/plugin/i386/ns610/libjavaplugin_oji.so libjavaplugin_oji.so

Supported Solaris Operating Systems

Global Conflict will run on Solaris version 8. A Sun SPARC or Intel Pentium computer with at least 64 megabytes of RAM is required.

Prior to running the Global Conflict applet, version 1.4.1 of the Java 2 Runtime Environment must be installed. It can be downloaded from Sun. Be sure to read the installation instructions and install all required patches. Patches can be downloaded from http://sunsolve.sun.com.

After downloading and installing the plug-in, the NPX_PLUGIN_PATH environment variable must be set to the directory that contains the "javaplugin.so" file. Netscape uses this variable to locate the Java runtime environment. For example:

export NPX_PLUGIN_PATH=/usr/j2se/jre/plugin/i386/ns4

After installing the plug-in, it is necessary to restart Netscape twice due to a bug (bug #4358142).

Supported Browsers

Global Conflict will run on Netscape Communicator version 4.51 or higher, or on Microsoft Internet Explorer version 4.0 or higher.

Java Plug-In

The Global Conflict applet is written in Java 2, version 1.4. Since neither major browser currently supports Java 2, a Java Plug-In is used. The plug-in is about 6 megabytes in size, and will be downloaded the first time you start the applet.

Applet Initialization

The applet will take 1 to 2 minutes to load and initialize, depending upon the speed of your Internet connection and the speed of your machine. The applet is cached by the Java Plug-In, so it will load faster after the initial download.
